What 4 Months is Worth

Posted by CirrusEpix May. 6, 2008 @ 10:01 PM EDT

Have you ever wondered what your life is worth? I mean, you can calculate how much it costs in gas to drive back and forth to work, and how much the "man" pays you per hour - but have you ever wondered what your life is REALLY worth?

(note: EMO dudes, please take one big step back... I am so not asking it in a death/suicide kind of way)

To cut to the chase, I've finally dumped a bad little habit of mine. As of this afternoon I have gone cold turkey in a stone-cold kind of way. First stop, Ebay where I unloaded nearly 27 packages worth of PS1, PS2 and old PC games. Stop 2, my local used bookstore slash "den of liberalism and pot smell" where I traded in a pile of DVDs, a handful of PS2 games that were worthless on Ebay, and my PS2 and Gamecube (which were worth more there than at sucky EB Games).

Stop 3 was the hardest. I logged onto World of Warcraft and liquidated the entire inventories of my two characters that I have been playing for a little around 4 months and gave all the gold away to random strangers who passed me by. I thought this would be the easiest step, but for some reason, most people thought I was joking...

All in all- at the end of the night I had liquidated nearly 8 years of videogaming from my life. Now, this wasn't the first time I'd done this. Several years ago, my obsessive habit of keeping all my Transformers, GI Joes and other 80's toys in mint condition with all the original packaging netted me nearly $3K on Ebay and paid for the renovations to my first house. Today however, I considered this not only a spring cleaning of my collection, but also of my mind. You see, I just felt it was time to move on. Warcraft really showed this to me. For anyone who says that it is addicting and life ruining, they are completely correct! But before anyone says anything, NO, I did not get into a martial-brawl, or lose night of sleep, I just wasted hours of time that I could have been putting to better use.

Truth known, I have been wasting the last few years of my life doing things that net no rewards. Videogaming has a place, and I still own my DS (which is surpisingly fun) and I dont regret a minute of what I have done. I just feel it is time to move on, and I have made a promise to myself to spend more time improving my art, and working out at the gym. (two things that have fallen to crap over the last year.) SO WHY DO I POST THIS HERE? For one, I find it funny. Second, I hope it may also fall upon like ears.

So for anyone who wants to know what their life (or at least their obsessive videogame playing aspect of it) might be worth, it was $936.31 and 65 World of Warcraft gold pieces.

Now onto bigger and better things =)

SHIT! I've gotten all whiney and mopey again! ARG! BTW, ignore what I said... =)

Dude that's wicked. Now if only you can give up the hookers T_T.
THEN we can save you some reaaaaaal cash.
i mean fo' rizzle.
Sincerely,
"WOH" Word Of Hate

May. 6, 2008 | 10:14 PM CirrusEpix responds:

But I love the hookers =(

In all honesty for someone who may be considering it, hookers are WAY cheaper than getting married and having kids. You can even write them off on your taxes! LOL

May. 6, 2008 | 10:07 PM MtBall says:

I'm very impressed that you did all that. I've been playing WoW since release. It took over my life for a year or two, but at this point not so much.

Cept when new expansions roll out! :3

Keep up the great artwork, and try to get rid of that body flab ;)

May. 6, 2008 | 10:12 PM CirrusEpix responds:

I want people to know, I liked playing WoW and knocking it is the last thing I want to do. I just kinda woke up today and said "I could be doing more." And did.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:15 PM Hylian-Mafia says:

This is impressive although I still laugh at the fact of what you said in your Warcraft Indian Cows? news post.

"I'm not going to post my name or server seeing as I am not going to play past the trial, but I'd love it if you'd share your thoughts and feelings about WoW."

May. 6, 2008 | 10:24 PM CirrusEpix responds:

Yeah, I really need to update this blog more often...

2-3-08 Started Trial
2-4-08 Upgraded
2-5-08 Fell off Face of Earth...
3-1-08 Applied for animation job at Blizzard
3-2-08 They laughed at me... Really.
5-8-08 Finally gave up...

BTW, "Hylian" Beyond Good and Evil was one of my fav games.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:19 PM RubberNinja says:

Although I own a lot of games, I rarely have time to play them.

So it doesn't really bother me.

Financially it's not a big deal, as long as I only buy what I truly feel I utterly want.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:27 PM CirrusEpix responds:

This really wasn't about the money either. Its a bit hard to explain. Its really about the fact that I've been withdrawing recently into mindless things, and haven't done anything creative or artistic for months. I see this as a jumpstart back into what used to make me happy. Besides, of all people you know the joy of releasing a film on NGs. I want to do that more often.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:26 PM destructin says:

What are you going to do with all that cash??

May. 6, 2008 | 10:29 PM CirrusEpix responds:

Who said anything about it being mine?! I just put new siding on my house. Something's gotta pay for that =)

May. 6, 2008 | 10:29 PM Hylian-Mafia says:

Beyond Good and Evil....Never played that game even though I used to have a poster of that on my wall...I really should check it out.

May. 7, 2008 | 12:13 AM CirrusEpix responds:

Oh, I figured because Hylis was the name of the world in that game.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:30 PM JonBro says:

I don't think I'll sell eight years worth of gaming anytime soon.

If I do, all I would to is buy it all again. XD

May. 6, 2008 | 10:37 PM Gmagnum says:

Holy shit dude, I've just replaced what I used to spend time on with video games, I now use that time on flash and the internet. Every now and then having a break for about one game.

Glad you cleaned yourself out, better late than never.

May. 6, 2008 | 10:48 PM godmonkey1 says:

lol what CirrusEpix said about the whole mmorpg thing is true luckly he got out of the loop (great job) i use to play runescape (go on and lol) anyhow yea i started in 7th grade and ended in 2007 dec 10th so let see that about a good 4 years of my life for a click base game lol yep mmorpg will be then end of us all
great job on get out of the loop it like trying to get off crack no lie people

May. 6, 2008 | 10:56 PM Flatthead says:

I sold all my games but didn't think how much my life is worth. I had the discussion with my friends though.

May. 7, 2008 | 12:16 AM CirrusEpix responds:

Well, its a bit of a metaphore. Even as dark and sadistic as I am, I would never say my life was ONLY videogames.

Its just that is one of many forms of entertainment (like TV) that doesn't give back anything for all the time it takes.

May. 7, 2008 | 12:15 AM BlazeTrack says:

Yeap, I've done that before and will do that again soon. I just turned 18 and I believe its time to grow up and move on. Im in the process of buying my first house right now and with my shitty job things like viedogames and wow and whatnot just won't fit, i'll need every penny. I'd like to stop drinking and smoking but that would be tooo hard for me now. Anyway good luck with your goals, cuz im damn sure going to accomplish mine. Keyword Sacrifice.

May. 7, 2008 | 1:23 AM RubberNinja says:

"3-1-08 Applied for animation job at Blizzard
3-2-08 They laughed at me... Really."

Care to elaborate?

May. 7, 2008 | 6:58 AM CirrusEpix responds:

Nothing much to say actually. I have been looking for a new job and I've applied to a lot of places. Places like Disney, Pixar, and Blizzard are still so highly desired, that if they don't need you, they let you know. If you get a "sorry we dont need your talents" letter in under 24 hours, thats an employment smackdown.

May. 7, 2008 | 2:13 AM MysticShinHanKu says:

That's great, glad to hear it. go out and accomplish what truly makes you happy. There's not enough time to waste any of it...though we can't really help it.

May. 7, 2008 | 4:14 AM El-Tom says:

heh, i know how u feel man, i kinda did the same thing. i stoped playing WoW. A good choice i've gotta say but selling all of the old games and stuff, i've never though of doing that. I havn't used most of the games and stuff for years so i could get a few 100 from it lol. I hope ur art and gyming improve!
Tom

May. 7, 2008 | 5:08 AM OdHero says:

Luckily I developed a mindset that instantly turns me off at the thought of WoW. It tooks years though.

Whenever I feel like returning to WoW, I think what will I do when I get back. Then a little movie that plays in my mind of me running up to a boar, and hitting 16. No matter what feature of WoW I hear that is new and cool, that little trick stops me ever wanting to play.

But WoW did get a fair bit of my life from 2004 - 2006, but all my friends played I guess so it wasnt too much of a loss.

May. 7, 2008 | 11:54 AM SharkStein says:

Lol man you make it sound like games are the ultimate waste of time, admit it, most of our lives we do pretty much useless stuff. :D
I mean nice man, giving up stuff like that and all but this just sounds like having a hobby of some kind is a crime in your eyes.

May. 7, 2008 | 4:21 PM CirrusEpix responds:

1. I kept my DS and Flashcard
2. I'm just trading hobbies to drawing and animating

May. 7, 2008 | 1:46 PM Fierras says:

I'm in the same place right now. I've been selling all my games on ebay as well. I feel like these distractions have been holding me back from accomplishing my real goals. I've actually never dared to try out world of warcraft because I was afraid I would get addicted to it. Games like that have no end, so I tend to avoid them.

May. 7, 2008 | 3:08 PM SaltshakerClock says:

I feel as if I should clean out some of my old habits as well. This story inspired me to move on and do better things than surf the BBS.

May. 7, 2008 | 3:09 PM Archem says:

Man, I'm glad you "cleared" your mind of sinful things! Now you can become a priest! *Looks at a sack* Not the warcraft kind of priest, you dirty old sack of potatoes!
(Joking. I'm crazy :P)

Anyway, I agree, after stopping playing WoW, I realised I wasted time on earning stupid gold. But that's life I guess...
Of course, I don't think that quitting video games was the solution. I can get it if you sold your PS2 and all other old shit you don't use any more, but if you sold all of your games, than you're crazier than me!

Conclusion: Video games = good, but for 3 hours a day, Pot and drugs = bad (and this I said because it has no relation to what you've just written. (Or does it?!) )

May. 7, 2008 | 4:23 PM CirrusEpix responds:

Never did pot, but I think the point was well taken =)

May. 7, 2008 | 3:47 PM Lalo says:

those were some serious moves :O! you are my hero now. altho i dont like the gym idea much, maybe because i dont find it necesary... yet :P

May. 7, 2008 | 4:06 PM Meruto says:

Don't know about 4 months, but according to Environmental Protection Agency, a human life is worth $3.7 million (or $2.3 million if you're over 70).

May. 7, 2008 | 4:25 PM CirrusEpix responds:

Crap! What line do I wait in to get my check?!

Lets see... if my arm is about 10% of my bodyweight, then it would be worth 370K. Yup, that sounds fair =)

May. 7, 2008 | 6:11 PM Rammer says:

i can't imagine getting rid of all that stuff. it's simply incomprehensible for me. i attach memories to EVERYTHING i own, so it's unbelievably hard for me to even think of getting rid of something. coupled with that fact that i am also a very indecisive person, it's nigh impossible.

May. 7, 2008 | 6:11 PM Mechy012 says:

ignore the guy above me, a human life is priceless.

May. 7, 2008 | 6:58 PM shabbo says:

May. 7, 2008 | 9:43 PM WAaAzZAaA says:

dont take it as an insult, but you were a geek :P

Jun. 8, 2008 | 10:51 PM CirrusEpix responds:

Were? Forever, and ever =)

May. 7, 2008 | 9:55 PM Kajenx says:

Haha, I'm so cheap I never buy anything. I would never sell my movies though, that's valuable research material!

WoW was the biggest letdown ever. I was bored to tears playing it. I have no idea how anyone could get addicted to it...

May. 8, 2008 | 12:52 AM LoveSlater says:

I was just going thru NG aimlessly when I stumbled on your post. For some people, videogames are a diversion and a time waster at worse but for me, videogames were like crack cocaine . I struggled with videogame addiction for a good chunk of my adolescence. I used to be so addicted to them that there were days I couldn't sleep w/o playing VG. Thank God I'm finally free (almost 1 yr and counting) and I don't ever wanna go back to that again. I hear ya and it's impressive when you stop and look at the things you have accomplished thus far w/o VGs on your way and you get that feeling of satisfaction, it's a beautiful thing.

Jun. 8, 2008 | 10:52 PM CirrusEpix responds:

There is sooo much, and yet sooo little I can say to that.
